EXERCISE enthusiasts are in for a treat at Carlow Town Park as a nearly-opened outdoor workout area has been unveiled.

The first of its kind in the county, the purpose-built street/calisthenics workout area was funded under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Calisthenics is a form of strength training that uses the resistance of the body and gravity to help strengthen muscles and improve co-ordination, endurance and mobility using minimal equipment. QR codes on the workout equipment can be scanned to provide users with information and instructions.

The aim of the workout area installation is to empower people to create healthy habits, enabling them to improve physical and mental health by exercising for free in their local park. An outdoor table tennis table and outdoor curveball table have also been installed.

Mayor of Carlow Fintan Phelan described it as “a great addition to our town park”. Cllr Andrea Dalton said that users will get “all the benefits of an indoor gym, plus an extra measure of vitamin D” and thanked all in the council office for their hard work on the project.
