Public consultation to shape new College Street mural

The public are being asked to suggest a new mural for the College Street building

Carlow County Council is inviting residents, businesses, community groups and anyone with a connection to College Street to share their ideas for a new public artwork celebrating the area's heritage, identity and community.

The council said the existing mural, located opposite the Cathedral's main entrance and forecourt, will be decommissioned and replaced with a new community-led artwork. The new piece will aim to celebrate Carlow's heritage, identity and aspirations while reflecting the significance of the civic space, with the council saying the final artwork will be informed by local stories, experiences and perspectives.

Members of the public are being invited to attend a consultation event where residents, community groups and stakeholders will have the opportunity to contribute ideas, themes and stories that could inspire the new mural. Attendees will also have the chance to meet local artists Beibhinn and Donough O'Brien, who have been commissioned to complete the project.

Speaking about the project, mayor of Carlow County Council, Ken Murnane, said: "This mural presents an exciting opportunity to create a lasting piece of public art that truly belongs to the people of Carlow. We want to hear from those who live, work and spend time in the town about the stories, memories and values that define this community."

The public consultation takes place at Carlow Town Library on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, from 12.30pm to 2pm. The event is free to attend.
