Gardaí detected over 4,600 drivers who committed speeding offences during Christmas week, one of whom was caught doing 167km/hr in an 80km/hr zone on the R430 at Crettyard, County Laois.
The road traffic enforcement operation was part of An Garda Síochána’s Christmas Road Safety Campaign, which began on 1 December and will continue until 5 January.
From Monday 22 December to Sunday 28 December, there were three fatalities on the roads and eight serious collisions, which resulted in several people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.
During the same week, Gardaí across the country carried out over 2,000 checkpoints and arrested 149 people for driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs.
Over 435 vehicles were seized by Gardaí for a range of offences under the Road Traffic Act, 1961.
There were approximately 150 Fixed Charge Notices issued for the offence of using a mobile phone while driving and 45 Fixed Charge Notices issued for seat belt offences.
To date, 189 people have lost their lives in road traffic collisions on Irish roads this year.
Gardaí are appealing to all those who will be taking to the roads over the remainder of the Christmas period to slow down, take extra care and give full attention to their driving.
