PUBLIC lighting at the busy Castledermot roundabout on the M9 is expected to be back in operation in the coming weeks, following months of disruption since they were damaged in August.

Kildare South and Labour Party TD Mark Wall has criticised the lengthy delay, calling for faster response times in repair and reconnection works at key road junctions.

“The Castledermot roundabout is a very busy junction and being without working lights has put many road users at risk, with my constituents reporting several near misses,” Deputy Wall said.

He confirmed that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has informed him the junction is maintained by the Motorway Maintenance & Renewals Contractor (MMaRC), Egis Lagan.

According to TII, the lights were switched off due to fire damage, and while repair work has now been completed, the reconnection by ESB Networks is still pending.

“While I welcome this news, I am disappointed in the long delays in carrying out the repair work and now the additional time to get the lights reconnected,” said Deputy Wall.

“This means the lights could be out for a total of three months. We need to have better response times in getting busy traffic junction lights back up and running without delay, we cannot continue to put people’s lives at risk.”

Transport Infrastructure Ireland confirmed in correspondence with Deputy Wall that certification for the repair work has been issued, with reconnection anticipated in the coming weeks.
