Miles for Myeloma will raise funds for rare form of cancer

The event will take place in Milford

THIS month, you’re being asked to don your runners and clock up some ‘Miles for Myeloma’.

Running across September, the inaugural event is being organised by Multiple Myeloma Ireland, a voluntary organisation that helps patients and their support network to better understand the disease, to ensure support and to raise awareness. Multiple Myeloma, also called Myeloma, is a cancer of the plasma cells. About 380 people are diagnosed in Ireland every year. And while there are treatments that can slow down and control the cancer, there is no cure for myeloma.

Multiple Myeloma Ireland not only support the patient and their families by providing resources and support, but they also support healthcare professionals – offering grants for research to develop new treatments and improvements in clinical practice. They run support groups

The Miles for Myeloma campaign is a virtual event inviting walkers, runners, cyclists and swimmers to take part and clock up miles all across Ireland, setting their own distance and pace. The month will culminate in a series of in-person events on Sunday 29 September.

In Carlow, the Donohoe family and friends have organised a five-mile walk along the River Barrow. Family member Mag is living well with the condition, thanks to the latest developments in treatment and early intervention. Described as a “powerhouse and an inspiration”, the family are inviting people to come along to show their support for Mag and for the work of Multiple Myeloma Ireland. They will meet at Milford at 2pm and set off for a riverside ramble, before making their way back to the Barrow Brew for a cuppa and a chat.

All donations received will go directly to providing support services and information for those affected by multiple myeloma. People are invited to donate what they can or contribute online at idonate.ie/fundraiser/jodonohoe157

Multiple Myeloma Ireland offer support groups in different parts of the country, as well as operating a free and confidential support line on 086 7804007 or email info@multiplemyelomaireland.org
