Latest weather warning issued for Carlow as flooding risk rises
Met Eireann
A STATUS Yellow rain warning has been issued for County Carlow and the wider Leinster region, with Met Éireann cautioning that heavy rainfall falling on already saturated ground is expected to bring flooding and difficult travelling conditions from tonight.
The warning, which comes into effect at 11pm tonight (Tuesday 17 February) and remains in place until 11pm on Wednesday 18 February, covers all of Leinster along with counties Cavan, Monaghan, Cork, Tipperary, and Waterford. Forecasters have warned that rain falling on ground already heavily saturated from recent wet weather, combined with elevated river levels, is likely to result in flooding, poor visibility, and hazardous conditions on the roads.
Carlow County Council has issued public safety guidance, urging residents to take precautions as conditions are expected to deteriorate overnight. Members of the public are warned not to attempt to drive through floodwater and to observe all road closed signs. “The road ahead is unsafe, the damage may be hidden beneath water, and you may be putting your life at risk,” the statement read.
Commuters are being asked to allow extra travel time over the coming days, reduce speed, and expect surface water, debris, and reduced visibility on local roads. Residents are also advised to stay back from riverbanks, streams, and canals, and to keep children and pets away from waterways and flooded areas.
The council has also flagged the risk posed by fallen electricity cables. ESB Networks is urging the public and emergency services to stay well clear of any downed live wires and to report them immediately by calling ESB Emergency Services on 1800 372 999. Power restoration updates can be tracked at www.PowerCheck.ie.
Uisce Éireann customers are advised to monitor the utility's website and social media channels for any service updates, and can contact their 24-hour customer care line at 1800 278 278.
Residents are being encouraged to check in with elderly neighbours or anyone who may need additional support should conditions worsen overnight. Carlow County Council can be reached outside of office hours at 059 9170300.
Up-to-date forecasts and warnings are available at www.met.ie, on the Met Éireann app, and via the service's social media channels at @meteireann. Updates on local road closures and flooding will also be posted on Carlow County Council’s social media channels.
