Immediate action is needed at popular Carlow scenic spot

Clashganny Lock

A BORRIS councillor has stressed that action needs to be taken "sooner rather than later" to avoid a situation that develops annually at Clashganny.

Cllr Willie Quinn urged the council to work with Waterways Ireland and the local superintendent before “things get out of hand” at the well-known beauty spot.

He pointed to the problem of large numbers of people parked up in the area and the difficulties that this creates annually for local businesses and residents.

Cllr Quinn suggested that the by-laws in the area were “not strong enough” and asked: “Will we be able to get a garda when we want one? What is the situation?”

Chief executive Coilín O’Reilly stated that the council had a briefing with Waterways Ireland and confirmed that he would discuss the matter with gardaí.

He questioned the suggestion that the by-laws may need to be changed, adding that criminal behaviour did not need a by-law. “I will have a conversation with Superintendent Farrell,” Mr O'Reilly stated.
