Hive of activity with beginners beekeeping course in Athy

Athy Beekeepers
A NEW beekeeping course for beginners is set to launch in Athy, offering locals a chance to dive into the world of apiculture. Starting on 12 February, the six-week programme will provide hands-on training in bee management and hive maintenance.
The South Kildare Beekeepers Association, a cornerstone of local beekeeping for over 90 years, will conduct the course at the Church of Ireland Centre in Athy. Priced at €65, participants will learn essential skills, from setting up hives to honey harvesting.
“This course is perfect for anyone curious about beekeeping or interested in supporting local biodiversity,” said Gerry Walsh from the association. It emphasises sustainable practices and the conservation of Ireland’s native honey bee, Apis mellifera mellifera, reflecting south Kildare’s status as a designated conservation area.
The course offers beginners practical experience under expert supervision with a planned summer visit to the club apiary to observe honey harvesting and extraction. Interested participants are encouraged to register soon at www.southkildarebeekeepers.org as spaces are limited.
