PUPILS at Gaelscoil Eoghan Uí Thuairisc in Carlow immersed themselves in a wide range of activities during Science Week 2025, which took place from 9 to 16 November.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of Science Week, with the theme “Then. Today. Tomorrow.” Speaking about the week’s events, learning support teacher Bríd Uí Mhaoluala said: “The children of Gaelscoil Eoghain Uí Thuairisc got immersed in activities that encompassed each classroom throughout the school.”

One of the highlights was a visit from Alan O’Reilly, better known on social media as ‘Carlow Weather’, who gave a talk to 6th class pupils that was “both engaging and informative.” Ms Uí Mhaoluala noted that Alan’s wife, Eimear Ní Bhraonáin, journalist and author of the best-selling book “The Dodger: DJ Carey and the Great Betrayal”, is both a past pupil of the Gaelscoil and mother of Róise, who is in 6th class.

Fourth class pupils travelled to SETU Carlow Campus to participate in a workshop entitled ‘Chemistry and the Celts with Scientific Sue’, adding to their knowledge of Ireland’s Celtic heritage.

The school also participated in an Irish language event on the theme of food from the sea, delivered by the Explorers Education Programme.

Younger pupils got hands-on experience with Beebots, programmable floor robots designed specifically for young children, while senior classes worked with younger children at a mini-Science fair featuring a variety of experiments.

All classes had time to work with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) kits from [steamkits.ie](http://steamkits.ie), and Chromebooks were in use throughout the week for Kahoot quizzes.

Ms Uí Mhaoluala praised the STEM Engagement Centre at SETU Carlow for “running so many events, especially those using our native language, that were made available to schools throughout the southeast.” Referring to newly elected President Catherine Connolly and her passion for the Irish language, Ms Uí Mhaoluala concluded: “With our newly elected Uachtarán Catherine Connolly and her passion for Gaeilge and the engagement in STEAM demonstrated by the Gaelscoil, the ‘tomorrow’ looks bright.”
