Leprino Foods Company announced its decision to cease operations from next year at its Portlaoise plant with the loss of over 130 jobs.

OVER 130 employees are to lose their jobs in Portlaoise when Leprino Foods Company closes its manufacturing plant of next year.

The company, which opened just four years ago, in the National Enterprise Park at Junction 17 just outside Portlaoise at Togher, announced the news today Tuesday 19 August.

In a statement the company said its decision to cease operations in Portlaoise follows “a comprehensive evaluation of all possible options to improve the financial and operational performance. Despite considerable efforts, the level of sustainable improvement needed could not be achieved. Closing the site will help ensure that Leprino can remain competitive while optimising its manufacturing footprint to continue meeting the evolving needs of customers.” 

Chief Executive of Leprino Europe Paul Vernon said: “We understand the impact this announcement will have on our colleagues, their families and the local community. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the talented team at Portlaoise. This decision does not lessen the value of their hard work or contributions.” 

 He said the company, “is committed to supporting employees throughout this transition, as well as ensuring continuity of supply for our customers. The company will provide enhanced redundancy packages, career transition assistance and regular updates to ensure transparency at every stage.” 

Production will be transitioned to other Leprino Europe facilities in Magheralin, Northern Ireland and Llangefni in Wales.

Mr Vernon said that the company will continue to explore opportunities for the site with any potentially interested third parties.

Headquartered in Northwich, Cheshire the company is part of the Leprino Foods Company of Denver, Colorado, USA. 

It is considered a world leader in the production of premium-quality dairy food and ingredients and one of the largest producers of mozzarella cheese in the world with a global workforce of over 5,500.
