Five people were killed on Carlow’s roads in 2025

The N80 continues to be lethal

FIVE people died on Co Carlow roads in 2025, according to the recent provisional road traffic collision figures from the Road Safety Authority. There were also five deaths on Carlow roads in 2024, while nationally, there was an 8% increase in fatalities year-on-year.

On 31 January, two students lost their lives when their car left the road and struck a tree on the notoriously dangerous stretch of the N80 at Leagh Bends.

Later in the year, a cyclist in his 20s was killed in a fatal road traffic collision at Kilmeany, Co Carlow. The incident occurred on Friday 12 September at approximately 11pm.

A pedestrian passed away after he was struck by a car at Ballyroughan Big, Borris on 1 November.

An 85-year-old woman was killed in a single-car collision in Myshall village on Monday 8 December. She, too, was a pedestrian.

A sixth death occurred just outside Co Carlow in Rath East on Friday 24 October, when a 66-year-old man died when his car was struck by another vehicle.

Elsewhere, the highest numbers of fatalities were recorded in Dublin (22), Cork (21) and Galway (17). The RSA report details that of the 185 people who died on Irish roads last year, 76 were car drivers, 41 were pedestrians, 30 were motorcyclists, 21 were passengers, 14 were pedal cyclists and three were e-scooter users.

Road deaths in Carlow have increased since the Covid-19 lockdowns of 2021 and 2022, when there were no deaths. In 2023, four people were killed.
