Fees slashed for new journalism course in Carlow
Eithna Quirke and Rosemary Flynn of SETU, Dr Eoghan Smith of Carlow College and Ashling Ward of Carlow Kilkenny Skillnet launch the January intake for the Higher Diploma in Arts in Journalism and New Media Content
JOURNALISM students are to benefit greatly from an upcoming higher diploma after South East Technological University (SETU) and Carlow College jointly received funding for it, bringing the cost down considerably for those about to embark on the programme.
SETU, in partnership with Carlow College and Carlow Kilkenny Skillnet, launched a new intake for their joint journalism course – the Higher Diploma in Arts in Journalism and New Media Content – starting in January. The course is being part-funded by Carlow Kilkenny Skillnet, reducing fees for learners from €2,500 to just €695 for eligible students, a significant investment for Carlow Kilkenny Skillnet to support the development of vital skills in the South-East region.
The postgraduate programme is designed for those looking to upskill or transition into the dynamic fields of journalism, digital storytelling and content creation.
Delivered part-time over two 12-week semesters, starting in January 2026 via blended learning, the course combines the flexibility of online learning with a small number of Saturday workshops, ensuring accessibility for working professionals and those with busy schedules. Each module may also be taken as a standalone certificate, providing maximum flexibility for learners.
Modules include feature writing, reporting and publication, news gathering and reporting, broadcasting, digital journalism, law and media business.
Applications now open with limited spaces available for the January 2026 intake. Full course details are available from the SETU website www.setu.ie/courses/higher-diploma-in-arts-journalism-and-new-media-content Applicants must first enquire with Carlow Kilkenny Skillnet for funding approval at admin@carlowkilkennyskillnet.ie.
