Ellen Glynn, one of Carlow’s oldest citizens, dies at 105

TRIBUTES have been paid to one of Co Carlow’s oldest citizens, who sadly died last week in her 106th year.
Ellen Glynn (née Moran), New Oak Estate, Carlow and formerly of Raheendoran, Carlow passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on 8 November last under the loving care of the nurses and staff of Hillview Nursing Home, Tullow Road, Carlow.
Beloved wife of the late Johnny, Ellen was a much-loved mother of Mary, Mikey and Kathleen and adored grandmother of Karina, Kenneth, Jacqueline, Cliona, Michelle, Aideen, Dermot and Orla.
At Monday’s meeting of Carlow County Council, cathaoirleach cllr Fergal Browne led a vote of sympathy for Ellen’s family, adding that she was a remarkable woman who worked until well into her 80s at Clerkin’s pub, where she was very fondly regarded by all.
“Ellen was 105 – the ninth-oldest person in the country,” said cllr Browne.
Last June, the wonderful mother to three, grandmother of eight, great-grandmother of 12 and great-great-grandmother of twins reached the remarkable age of 105. In August, Ellen was presented with her centenarian’s medal by cllr Browne, honouring her great age.
In an interview with
earlier this year, Ellen, who worked hard from a young age, revealed the secret to her long life as hard work and her strong belief in prayer – “hard work never killed anyone”.Requiem Mass took place in St Fintan’s Church, Ballinabranna, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
Ellen will be sadly missed by her loving son, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, sons-in-law Seán and John, daughter-in-law Lilly, nephews, nieces, relatives and her many friends.
