The late Elizabeth Kavanagh

ONE of Co Carlow’s oldest citizens was sadly laid to rest yesterday.

Elizabeth Kavanagh (née Kelly) from Broughillstown, Rathvilly passed away peacefully in her 104th year at the District Hospital, Carlow last Friday surrounded by her loving family.

A native of Ballycarney, Co Wexford, Elizabeth was born on 9 April 1922. A remarkable century later, she celebrated her 100th birthday in 2022 and enjoyed very good health up to recent months.

Last June, a smiling Elizabeth was pictured by The Nationalist walking confidently into her local polling station at Rathvilly NS to cast her vote in the local elections.

Elizabeth married Philip Kavanagh and the couple had eight children. She has lived the vast majority of her long life in Broughillstown, Rathvilly, with Philip sadly passing away in 1999. Elizabeth is also predeceased by her daughter Elizabeth.

Elizabeth’s requiem Mass was celebrated yesterday (Monday) in St Patrick’s Church, Rathvilly, followed by burial to the local cemetery.

She is sadly missed by her loving family Dorothy, Sheila, Philomena, Philip, Martha, Gerard and Geraldine, son-in-law, sister Bridie, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, neighbours, relatives and friends.
