By Elizabeth Lee A guest house on the outskirts of Carlow town was extensively damaged by a fire on Sunday evening.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at the Dolmen Hall Guest House on the Hackestown Road, Carlow at around 9.20pm on Sunday 4 January.

Traffic and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area as the fire services battled to bring the blaze under control.

The large building, which is sometimes used by workers and visitors to the town, was badly damaged and a large section of the roof was completely burnt out.

Fortunately, there are no reports of anyone being injured in the blaze and it’s believed that there was only one person in the building when the fire broke out.

Superintendent Anthony Farrell told The Nationalist that the guest house was “extensively damaged” and was “gutted” by the fire. He also confirmed that the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

Sunday night’s blaze wasn’t the first time that the emergency services had to deal with an incident at Dolmen Hall Guest House.

In October 2024, a bus that was parked outside the B&B went on fire and caused damage to the building. At that time it was being used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees but they have since been moved to alternative accommodation. That incident was not treated as suspicious either.
