Truck driver dodges drunk man lying on the street

The man was found lying on the road at Hanover
A CARLOW MAN who was found lying intoxicated on a street was fined at Carlow District Court.
Seán Brennan, 28 Huntington Court, Greenbank Road, Carlow pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place contrary to Section 4 of the
.The court heard that on 14 January, a truck driver narrowly avoided driving over Mr Brennan, who was lying on Hanover Road.
Evidence was given that the 53-year-old defendant was “shouting abuse in general” and refused assistance from ambulance services. He was unable to stand unaided due to his level of intoxication.
Defending solicitor Joe Farrell acknowledged his client was “a danger to himself that evening” and has difficulties with intoxicants. He told the court that Mr Brennan is “known to the gardaí, not necessarily for wrong reasons” and “wasn’t trying to be difficult” in refusing assistance.
The court heard the defendant has two previous convictions for similar offences, the most recent from 11 December 2024.
Judge Patricia Cronin said Mr Brennan “should have more sense” and “should have been in bed, not lying in the middle of the street”.
She noted he posed a danger to the truck driver and said if he was going to drink to excess, he should “do it at home”.
The judge imposed a fine of €200, to be paid within three months.
