A TINRYLAND man who was found with cocaine in his car has been fined €400 at Carlow District Court.
Killian Maher (27) pleaded guilty to possession of an illegal substance contrary to the following an incident on 21 December 2023.
The court heard that at approximately 9.10pm, Garda Conway stopped and searched a vehicle in Carlow town. He told the court that the male driver was acting nervously. A quantity of suspected cocaine in five separate “deal bags” with a street value of €311 was discovered in the car.
Mr Maher, of Kyleballyhue, Tinryland, Carlow, who has no previous convictions, cooperated with gardaí and informed them that the cocaine was for personal use only.
Solicitor Joe Farrell told the court that his client had “taken steps” and gone into treatment for substance addiction. He said Mr Maher admitted that he had been using “quite a bit” but has since turned his life around.
“He has not blotted his copybook since,” added Mr Farrell, asking if the matter could be resolved with a poor box donation.
However, Judge Geraldine Carthy noted that they were dealing with a Class A drug and that the value of what Mr Maher had in his possession was “quite high”.
Judge Carthy convicted and fined Mr Maher €400.
