A MOTORIST who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance when he appeared before Carlow District Court was spared a driving ban because of special circumstances.

Bashara Abdalla, 90 Highfield Manor, Graiguecullen pleaded guilty to the offence after he was stopped by gardaí on Leighlin Road, Graiguecullen on 24 May 2024.

Solicitor John O’Sullivan told Judge Geraldine Carthy that it was the family’s second car that he was driving on the day and that he was bringing it to be tested at the NCT centre when gardaí stopped him. He continued that Mr Abdalla’s wife was sick and that he needed his licence so that he could bring her to appointments, asking the judge not to put Mr Abdalla (61) off the road.

Judge Carthy accepted that there were special circumstances in the case and spared the defendant a driving disqualification, but she did fine him €300.
