A MAN who hid almost €85 worth of steaks in his jumper before walking out of a Bagenalstown supermarket was jailed for six months at Carlow District Court. Constantin Ghetu (35) pleaded guilty to the theft which occurred at Aldi supermarket in Bagenalstown on 20 September 2025.

The court heard that at 10.53am on the date in question, Mr Ghetu was caught on CCTV placing a number of steaks down his jumper and leaving the shop without paying. The meat was valued at €84.95.

The defendant, who has an address of 18 Portersfield, Clonsilla, Dublin 15, has 81 previous convictions, of which 79 relate to theft offences. His most recent conviction was at Nenagh Circuit Court on 26 February, where he received a six-month custodial sentence for fraud offences.

The court heard that Mr Ghetu, who is from Romania, has been living in Ireland for the past four years and is currently serving a four-year sentence. He asked to plead guilty to the theft offence before the court.

Judge Geraldine Carthy, taking the guilty plea into account, convicted Mr Ghetu and sentenced him to six months in prison.
