Rathoe woman convicted for possessing cocaine

Gardaí found white powder on her bedside locker

A RATHOE woman who “got involved with cocaine” was last week convicted in Carlow District Court and fined €250. Leah Kavanagh, Gilbertstown, Rathoe pleaded guilty to owning cocaine at that address when gardaí searched the house on 25 September last year.

Sergeant Hud Kelly told the court that gardaí executed a search warrant and found white powder on her bedside locker. While Sgt Kelly contended that the cocaine was worth €50, solicitor Chris Hogan said it was of a much lower value. He told Judge Geraldine Carthy that 31-year-old Ms Kavanagh had suffered a back injury, and while she was out of work, she got involved with cocaine. He continued that she is now returning to work and that she had a sum of money to pay into the court poor box as a donation, to avoid a conviction.

However, Judge Carthy replied to Mr Hogan that cocaine was a class A drug and that it was “very sad” to see it being used. She then convicted and fined Ms Kavanagh €250.
