One month in prison for dangerous driving

A CARLOW man received a one-month prison sentence for dangerous driving at a recent sitting of Carlow District Court On 24 May 2025, gardaí received a report of a road traffic collision in Carlow town. On arrival, they saw a white Toyota van with its lights on and engine running, which had collided with a lamppost.
A man known to them, Myles Doran, Brownshill Woods, Brownshill, Carlow, was the registered owner of the vehicle.
Gardaí said Mr Doran (37) appeared to be intoxicated, his speech slurred and that he smelled of alcohol.
They arrested him on suspicion of drink driving and conveyed him to Carlow Garda Station, where a blood sample was taken from him.
His solicitor Chris Hogan apologised to the court on his behalf, acknowledging that Mr Doran had “far too much to drink and absolutely should not have been driving”.
Mr Hogan continued that his client’s life had spiralled out of control over the past two years, that he had lost his home, family and “ultimately his liberty”.
Mr Doran had been remanded in custody for a public order offence in March and is currently serving a seven-month sentence.
Mr Hogan said his client is “doing his best in prison” and engaging with some supports.
Judge Geraldine Carthy convicted Mr Doran and sentenced him to one month in prison for the dangerous driving charge. She took into consideration two other charges for hit and run, and careless driving.
