A DRIVER who was caught for the fourth time behind the wheel without insurance was last week put off the road for six years when he appeared before Carlow District Court. Keith Dooley, Kilgorey, Crettyard, Co Carlow was in court for driving without insurance and failing to produce an insurance certificate after he was stopped by gardaí in Clonbrock, Co Laois on 20 February this year.
Sergeant Peter Smyth told the court that Mr Dooley had 51 previous convictions, including three for not having insurance cover.
Solicitor John O’Sullivan told Judge Geraldine Carthy that Mr Dooley (43) had had car trouble and had changed his car when he was stopped by gardaí. He continued that his client “was the first to put up his hand about his past” and that he is now doing well, with two of his children in college.
He asked Judge Carthy not to impose a jail sentence on his client and she obliged, but said that “there is no doubt that a disqualification” would be in order. She then put him off the road for six years and fined him €500.
Recognisances were fixed in the event of an appeal.
