A MAN who pleaded guilty to numerous counts of theft from two shops in Carlow amounting to €2,506 worth of goods was sentenced to 15 months in prison when he appeared before the local district court last week. Dean Smith, with addresses at 58 Marina Court, Athy and Shangan Park, Ballymun, Dublin 9 pleaded guilty to six counts of thefts from the two shops as well as a count of burglary at a charity shop at Castle Street, Carlow on dates between July and December last year.

The shops targeted by Mr Smith were Homesavers, Penny Lane, Carlow and Mr Price, Kennedy Avenue, Carlow.

The thefts included €150 worth of goods from Homesavers on 20 November, €1,922 worth of electrical items on 17 November and a further €203 worth of electrical goods on 9 December.

The offences involving Mr Price occurred when the defendant stole €75 worth of items on 26 September, €51 worth of goods on 10 December and another €105 worth of goods on 5 December.

Nicolas Revilles BL told Judge Geraldine Carthy that his client had been in the “throes of substance abuse” at the time and that a lot of what he stole was groceries, but Judge Carthy pointed out that a lot of electrical goods were also stolen by Mr Smith.

Mr Revilles told the judge that Mr Smith had been in custody since his last offence in December and that he was now clean of drugs and was “trying to repair his life”.

He asked her to consider his client’s early guilty plea and the fact that he has been in custody since.

Judge Carthy replied that the offences were of a serious nature and that she must consider the effects they had on the two businesses involved. She then sentenced Mr Smith to 15 months in custody, which she backdated to 13 December.
