A LEARNER who failed the driving test three times in the past three years was fined for driving unaccompanied on a learner permit.

Keith Mitchell, 18 Droughill Lawn, Portarlington pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared at Portlaoise District Court.

The 34-year-old was driving a Nissan Qashqai when he was stopped by gardaí at Pine Villas in Portarlington on 22 June 2024. He proved to be a learner permit holder who was not accompanied by a qualified driver.

Working as a plasterer, he had 22 previous convictions that included 12 for road traffic offences. He had one previous conviction for driving unaccompanied on a learner permit in 2015.

Judge Andrew Cody said: “It seems to me that you have been driving unaccompanied for a long time.”

Mr Mitchell replied: “I was struggling to pass the driving test. I failed it three times in the past three years but I hope to pass it very soon.”

Warning him to be very careful in future, Judge Cody fined him €350.
