Graiguecullen man sentenced to 21 months for theft offences

A 34-YEAR-old man who appeared before Carlow District Court on 26 charges was sentenced to 21 months in jail by Judge Geraldine Carthy at a recent hearing.

The judge noted she was “unfortunately quite familiar” with the defendant, Sean Nelson, with an address at Sleaty Street, Graiguecullen and had “attempted to assist him as much she possibly could during this challenging time”.

The 26 charges related to various theft and burglary offences that Mr Nelson committed between July 2025 and April 2026 at various supermarkets in Carlow. He was remanded in custody on 11 May and soon afterwards pleaded guilty to the charges. The total value of the property that was stolen across the 26 theft charges was estimated at €462.94.

The defendant appeared via video link at Carlow District Court to hear that Judge Carthy believed the threshold of custody had been reached and that the matters before the court were “quite substantial”.

Judge Carthy noted she had a “duty to you and also a duty to the people of Carlow” and said: “To be fair, every time you are detained or arrested, your response to the majority of the charges is ‘sorry about all this’.”

She sentenced Mr Nelson to seven months in prison for theft at Aldi supermarket, Hanover Road, Carlow on 8 September 2025, backdated to when he entered custody. She sentenced him to a consecutive a seven-month sentence for a breaking into a Ferrybank apartment and a further seven months consecutively for the most recent offence, theft of alcohol from Callinan Quik Stop Food Store on 6 April.

All 23 other matters were taken into consideration.

Solicitor Joe Farrell asked the judge to fix recognisance for appeal and the judge consented on the condition that Mr Nelson provide €1,000 in own bond and €500 cash to the court, observe a curfew and sign on at Carlow Garda Station daily.
