Graigue woman in ‘last chance saloon’

Defendant had seven previous convictions

A GRAIGUECULLEN woman was given a suspended sentence last week at Carlow District Court when she pleaded guilty to public order offences.

Solicitor Joe Farrell said that his client, Olivia Dalton, “knew that she was in the last chance saloon” and had sought rehabilitation for the first time.

Ms Dalton, 1 Chaff Street, Graiguecullen pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place and to engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour at Park Lane, Carlow on 20 March this year.

Insp David Shore told Judge Cephas Power that Ms Dalton was arrested and brought to Carlow Garda Station for her own safety and that she had seven previous convictions under the Public Order Act.

Mr Farrell said that Ms Dalton (49) was admitted for rehabilitation and that it was her first time to seek help with her addiction. He added that she was “very difficult to handle when intoxicated” and she knew that “this was her last chance saloon”.

Judge Power sentenced Ms Dalton to two months’ imprisonment but, taking into account the efforts that she was making to get sober, suspended the sentence in full for 12 months.
