A MOTORIST who was almost five times over the legal limit was last week banned from driving for three years when he appeared before Carlow District Court.

Arvis Caicis, 139 Glendale Estate, Shillelagh Road, Tullow represented himself in court when he pleaded guilty to a charge of drunk driving. The charge arose when Mr Caicis was spotted driving by gardaí on 21 February, who stopped him at Pollerton Manor, Carlow.

Insp David Shore told the court that Mr Caicis was arrested and brought to Carlow Garda Station and that a blood sample taken from him showed a reading of 243mg of blood when the maximum legal limit was 50mg.

He added that Mr Caicis (30) had no previous convictions.

Judge Cephas Power noted that the level was in the maximum category for a first-time offence and put him off the road for three years, while also fining him €500.
