Brothers plead guilty to selling drugs

Sentencing adjourned until 6 November

TWO brothers last week pleaded guilty to selling drugs when they appeared before Carlow District Court. Michael (30) and Shane Sweeney (25) of Deerpark View, Baltinglass pleaded guilty to possessing drugs and for having them for sale or supply at that address on 31 August 2023.

The case had been before the court earlier this year when it heard that gardaí searched the house after they received information about the sale of illegal drugs from that address and they found a quantity of cannabis, a weighing scales and some cash during a raid. Last week, solicitor Chris Hogan told Judge Geraldine Carthy that both brothers took responsibility for different quantities of drugs found in various locations around the house and that both admitted to selling them. He continued that Shane Sweeney was en route to the Electric Picnic festival in Co Laois when gardaí raided the house and found the drugs, while Michael Sweeney “was selling small amounts of drugs” to feed his addiction. Mr Hogan added that the gardaí described it as a low-level operation and that both of them were in employment. Judge Geraldine Carthy heard that Shane Sweeney had tested negative recently for all substances and that they have both learned “a salutary lesson.”  Judge Carthy replied that she would not give her final decision on sentencing until she had read and considered all the facts in the case and adjourned sentencing until 6 November.
