Alleged train groper to return in three weeks

The man allegedly sexually assaulted a man and a woman on the Carlow to Athy train

A MAN who allegedly sexually assaulted a man and a woman on the Carlow to Athy train will have to return to court at the end of March to find out how his case will progress.

“Really, it’s so wrong!” commented Judge Desmond Zaidan in Athy District Court, where the man’s case was getting a preliminary airing.

Garda Emma Carroll told the court that “on 3 November 2023 on a train journey between Carlow and Athy, he engaged in some inappropriate touching”.

“He rubbed his hand along his thigh and touched her breast,” the garda clarified. “The male reported it at the next stop, and he was arrested that night.

“He says he does not remember,” said Garda Carroll.

Because a translator in the man’s home tongue could not makes it to court last week, Judge Zaidan said to Garda Carroll: “I will extend translator services to assist, if you can have the two victims here on the next day.”

The judge then remanded the defendant on continuing bail until 25 March. Reporting restrictions were imposed in the case.
