County Carlow author publishes latest instalment of children’s adventure series

Author Mary Crowe has written a children's book in time for Christmas

LOCAL AUTHOR Mary Crowe is set to publish the second book in her historical children’s adventure stories series, Ros Bruc tonight, Tuesday 9 December.

Ros Bruc II: Aoife O’Connor and the Monk’s Treasure launches in Graignamanagh Library tonight at 6.30pm. Copies of the book will be available on the night and then from Nuala Barron’s shop in Graignamanagh.

This series follows a modern-day girl from the Carlow countryside called Aoife O’Connor who travels back in time to 7th century AD Carlow.

Specifically, this book is set during the Synod of Leighlin in 630AD where St Laisrén persuaded Irish bishops to adopt the Roman method for calculating Easter’s date each year instead of the Celtic method. However, as this is a children’s adventure story, Ms Crowe mixes historical fact with the fantastical.

This instalment sees Aoife mixing with talking cats and drunken leprechauns as she navigates the world of Moling, Finn, Lassera and friends.

“I’ve mixed truth and fiction to come up with a story that’s firmly fixed in Carlow roots,” Ms Crowe said.

She spent a few years researching the period before deciding to write a children’s book set in that era.
