Councillors learn of upgrades to roads

Hacketstown roundabout will get an upgrade

UPGRADES to Carlow roads worth €250,000 were discussed at the most recent meeting of Carlow Municipal District on 26 February.

Cian Madden, senior executive engineer, told councillors that under climate adaptation grants worth €75,000, Carlow MD would see upgrades to the Hacketstown roundabout, Burtonhall drainage and flood prevention work on the Dublin Road.

Bridges across the north of the county will also receive attention, with works planned for Springfield bridge, Ballycrogue bridge and Browneshill Avenue bridge. Grants for these works are worth €75,000.

The MD has received a further €100,000 for safety improvements to roads in 2026, which Mr Madden said would be spent on the second phase of pouring a 400m long footpath in Mortarstown, “softening” a dangerous bend on Green Road and “implementing some additional traffic-calming measures in Palatine village” to tackle speeding issues.

The council noted that the pedestrian crossing in Monacurragh has been completed and that drainage upgrades on the Ballinacarrig and Burtonhall/Rusellstown Road are underway. They have also completed some safety works on Green Road.

In terms of footpaths, the county engineers will work on addressing issues at Castle Oaks, Askea Lawns, Roncalli Place, Burren Hall and Clayton Manor.
