THE Fifth Carlow Town Scout Group achieved remarkable success at the recent Carlow/Kilkenny County Shield competition with its Sionnach patrol claiming first place overall and the Eagle patrol securing third position.

The prestigious scouting event, held from 25-27 April in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, saw scout patrols from both counties compete in a range of challenging activities designed to test their scouting skills and teamwork. During the weekend-long competition, patrols were evaluated on their proficiency in essential scouting disciplines, including cooking, pioneering, orienteering and camp craft. They were also judged on campsite set-up, which involved constructing functional structures using traditional materials such as wooden spars and sisal rope.

Michael Whelan, group leader of the Fifth Carlow Town Scout Group, expressed immense pride in the achievement. “This event not only celebrates the scouts’ technical abilities but also fosters personal growth, independence and lifelong friendships,” he said.

“We are incredibly proud of all our scouts and leaders who participated, and especially of the commitment and camaraderie shown throughout the weekend,” he added.

The victory means the Sionnach patrol will now represent Carlow/Kilkenny at national level in the Phoenix Challenge, scheduled to take place from 14-17 August in Pallaskenry, Co Limerick.

The group members celebrated their accomplishment on social media, posting: ‘We did it! Massive congratulations to our Sionnach team on winning – what an incredible achievement! And a huge well done to our Eagle Patrol on getting placed in their very first Shield – a fantastic result and a proud moment for everyone.’

The post also acknowledged the efforts of everyone involved in making the event possible, from the hosts in Thomastown to the organising team and the scout leaders who dedicated numerous weekends to training the young participants.

The Fifth Carlow Town Scout Group, now the only scout group in Carlow town – and with nearly 100 years of scouting history – continues to welcome new members and volunteers. Those interested in joining or volunteering can contact groupleader5thcarlowtown@gmail.com.

“No previous experience is necessary – full training is provided and the rewards are immeasurable,” said Mr Whelan. “As our scouts grow, so too do our leaders, in knowledge, experience and connection.”
