Pest control provider Rentokil is advising people across Co Carlow to be aware of cockroaches after noticing an increase in callouts for cockroach infestations over the summer months.

Rentokil urges home and business owners across the county to stay vigilant for signs of cockroaches, which typically hide in clusters in warm, dark spaces such as behind cupboards, under sinks, and behind appliances like stoves and refrigerators.

Finding cockroaches in a home or business can be distressing, and much of the fear associated with them stems from the appearance and behaviour of these insects. With rapid movements and a tendency to emerge from dark places unexpectedly, cockroaches often evoke feelings of fear and disgust.

More concerning, however, is their role as carriers of serious diseases such as salmonella, dysentery, and gastroenteritis. Increases in eczema, asthma, and allergies have been linked to exposure to cockroach droppings, saliva, and the body parts they shed when they moult.

One of the most noticeable indicators of a cockroach problem is the smell they emit. Cockroaches tend to produce an oily, musty scent, while some individuals detect a sweet odour. If an unpleasant, lingering odour is noticed under sinks, behind appliances, or in store cupboards, it is essential to check for signs of cockroaches.

“Cockroaches are extremely resilient insects and breed rapidly, making professional treatment essential to control any infestation,” said Colm Moore, Technical Area Manager for Rentokil. “They leave behind traces of their saliva, faeces, and body parts in the spaces they occupy. These remnants contain specific proteins that act as allergens, potentially leading to blocked sinuses, ear and sinus infections, eye irritation, and a persistent cough. As cockroaches can be difficult to detect, many people might mistake these symptoms for a cold.” Rentokil advises people to take the following steps to prevent or eliminate cockroach infestations in homes or businesses:

Eliminate food sources: Avoid leaving liquid in sinks or buckets and do not leave food on counters. Store dry food in tightly sealed containers. Rinse food or drink containers before placing them in the recycling bin, and empty rubbish bins regularly.

Clean: Ensure all food and liquid debris is removed from the premises. Remove pet food, drink, and litter trays before nightfall.

De-clutter: Get rid of old newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, and general clutter. These provide hiding places for cockroaches, which will attract others by releasing an aggregation pheromone.

Preventative measures: To prevent cockroaches from entering your premises, seal key areas such as cracks in walls, around skirting boards, behind electrical sockets, and under kitchen sinks and bathroom cabinets.
