Fireworks worth approximately €8,000 were seized by gardaí in Carlow town yesterday, Wednesday 30 October.

Gardaí were on patrol in an unmarked patrol car at about 7.25pm when they signalled a van to pull over.

After a short pursuit, the van stopped and the driver and passenger fled the scene on foot.

Gardaí seized the van and brought it to Carlow Garda Station where they searched it, uncovering €8,000 worth of illegal fireworks.

An investigation is ongoing.

Gardaí would like to remind people to be careful around fireworks and bonfires this Halloween night.

“Fireworks are illegal for a reason and can cause significant injuries,” Superintendent Anthony Farrell told The Nationalist.

“Young people especially don’t see the risk and can therefore expose themselves to danger. Stay away from fireworks this Halloween and exercise caution around bonfires. If you have children, know where they are tonight. Keep them safe.”

He continued: “Please be especially conscious of vulnerable people and those who live alone who might be afraid. Keep pets inside at all times. With the fire service and the emergency services, gardaí will be actively on the ground during the course of this evening and tonight. Extra personnel will be in place to deal with the increase in call-outs."

If you need the gardaí or fire service this evening, please ring 999 or 059 9136620.
