JANUARY can be a very tough month for a lot of people, with the dark days lingering on. Rundermot’s annual event is a great way to get the community together to support charities and to support eachother.

Locals joined together for the annual event on 19 January, raising awareness for mental health and funds for local charities Abbeyview mental health facility in Castledermot, St Vincent De Paul and the Irish Wheelchair Association in Athy.

Event organiser, Siobhan Phelan said: “Our run is not about winning – it’s about getting people to understand the importance of looking after your mental health.”

The event started with a minute’s applause in memory of young Gavin Anthony, who sadly passed way a few days before the event.

As the runners stood at their marks getting ready to run, Gavin’s favourite band AC/DC was played in honour of him. And with that, the runners were off.

The first winner of the day was was Ian Molloy from St Laurence O’Toole AC for the 5km race, with Laura Ward from St Abbans AC and Lily Anne Keatley not far behind!

The rest carried on from the finish line for the 10km, with Colin Coyne from St Laurence O’Toole AC in for the win and Aoife May Kirwan from St Laurence O’Toole as the first woman home.

All were presented with kindly donated hampers and prizes. A special hamper was given to Lily Anne Keatley as the first child to make it past the finish line.

After the run, a brilliant total of €3,196 was raised in aid of the chosen charities.
