AN ESTIMATED two tonnes of litter were removed by 350 volunteers in Co Carlow recently as part of energetic national campaign. Although the event is titled ‘Big Beach Clean’, that wasn’t going to stop landlocked Co Carlow volunteers getting involved, with our rivers the focus of the clean-up, which is supported by An Taisce and Carlow County Council.

Among them was Carlow Tidy Towns, Love Carlow and Dooley Motors Kia Dealership, who gathered at the River Barrow bright and early on the Saturday morning to conduct a big river clean. The group collected 67kg in total, a whopping 28 bags of rubbish along the River Barrow, with cigarette butts and food wrappers among the main items collected. Clean Coasts joined forces with Kia Ireland who supported the initiative this year by providing clean-ups kits and supplies to volunteers throughout the country.

“This year’s event was the largest yet and is a powerful reminder of the collective impact we can make when we work together,” said Bronagh Moore, An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme manager. “The dedication and support of all of these groups is hugely inspiring and we thank each and every one of them for their contribution,” she added. Following all the hard work in Carlow, Dooley Motors sponsored refreshments afterwards in Graiguecullen Parish Centre for all the volunteers.
