AMONG THE thousands of voters in Co Carlow last Friday, there were two very special visits to the polling station – with a staggering 82 years separating them!
The famous Maher quads from Ballon – Johnnie, Robbie, Jamie and Lillie – celebrated a milestone moment when they voted for the first time at their polling station in Rathoe. The 18-year-olds were delighted to exercise their franchise for the first time – making all who remember the four tiny tots, born at just 28 weeks, feel very old!

It was a wonderful sight in Carlow town, too, on Friday when hale and hearty100-year-old Bridget Delaney independently walked into her polling station at St Laurence O’Toole’s to cast her vote. Bridget from O’Hanrahan Avenue, Carlow celebrated her incredible milestone birthday on polling day 29 November. Bridget says the secret to her long life is “hard work” and to this day remains very active.
