CARLOW’S top garda has said that a recent increase in crime locally requires an increased garda response.

Superintendent Anthony Farrell was responding to a spate of incidents that occurred across the county last Tuesday, recent robberies at two betting offices in Carlow town and two separate arson incidents at housing estates, again in Carlow town.

“Crime fluctuates. By nature of any influx of crime big or small, this guides the garda response,” Supt Farrell told The Nationalist.

“As part of that response here in Carlow, checkpoints and patrols will continue to take place, particularly in areas affected by crime. To supplement our local resources, checkpoints and patrols, I’ve requested support from regional uniformed units, especially during hours of darkness, to saturated targeted areas and areas most affected by crime,” he said.

The public are also being asked to play their part in crime prevention.

“I would ask that people be conscious of protecting their property, that houses are secured, especially when vacant,” added Supt Farrell, asking people not to leave property visible, “especially valuable property in your car, garden or around your house”.

He also suggested that shed and outhouses should be locked and appealed for people to check in on elderly and vulnerable people in communities, to ensure their safety.
