New sign at M9 exit is putting lives at risk

The new sign at junction 5 of the M9 at Tinryland
MOTORISTS are “taking their lives in their hands” trying to negotiate a roundabout at Exit 5 of the M9 – made all the more treacherous by a confusing sign.
So claimed cllr Will Paton at a recent meeting of Carlow County Council. Cllr Paton described a new TII road sign at Tinryland as “very confusing” despite the sign attempting to bring some clarity to motorists when negotiating the roundabout.
“There are two lanes going into one, but no-one knows who has the right of way,” said cllr Paton. “Motorists are taking their lives in their hands there,” he added.
Cllr Jim Deane agreed, adding that confusion at Junction 5 “wasn’t really an issue until the new sign went up”.
“You’d question do they really know the rules of the road at all because the sign seems to contradict that?
“You have people pulling up in the middle of the road because they don’t know what to do … TII really need to look at this,” said cllr Deane.
“There’s a poster of Jennifer there, maybe they’re all looking at that … that could be the problem,” quipped cllr Andy Gladney.
Chief executive Coilín O’Reilly said that the council would contact TII to carry out a safety audit at Junction 5 to examine the matter raised by members.
