Inaugural Carlow bridge competition raises €2,000 for cancer
The Acorn Bridge Club members with a cheque for Irish Cancer Society.
ACORN Bridge club inaugurated the Sheila Gallagher memorial cup competition earlier this year with an open bridge competition run in her memory.
There were around 90 people at the competition in the ballroom of the Seven Oaks hotel, which had “a great atmosphere,” said Úna Kelly, club president. Pat McCormick and David Cope emerged as the winning pair.
The competition was named after Sheila Gallagher as she was the co-founder of the club, “a wonderful teacher and mentor to bridge players in Carlow and beyond,” said Úna. Pat and David were presented with a trophy that was gifted by the Gallagher family. Micheal Gallagher was presented representing the family.
Proceeds from ticket sales for the event and a raffle was donated to the daffodil nurses of the Irish Cancer Society. The committee handed over a cheque for €2,000 raised at a club meeting over the summer.
Úna said Acorn Bridge club members were supportive in attending the competition and even those who could not attend made generous donations. She also expressed gratitude to other bridge clubs in Carlow and surrounding areas for supporting the event and to local businesses who sponsored raffle prizes.
