Draughts club makes all the right moves to win Beat FM award

SportsBeat presenter Ódhran Johnson plays Bennekerry Tinryland's 10-year-old Kenny Bolger in a head-to-head
BENNEKERRY/TINRYLAND Draughts Club was the October winner of Beat FM’s SportsBeat Club of the Month in association with Eco Solar Energy.
There was great excitement in the Palatine GAA clubhouse when Beat 102/103 FM’s Ódhran Johnston came to visit the draughts club at one of its practice sessions on a Friday afternoon. Ódhran challenged U12 player Kenny Bolger to a one-on-one match, but Ódhran didn’t stand a chance, with Kenny showing off all his master moves on the board.
Club founding member Patrick Breen chatted to Beat about the draughts club’s 40 years in existence and its links with Community Games.
Mairéad Breen, Teresa Broderick and Christy Stynes waxed lyrical about the under-14 and U16 all-Ireland titles won in 2024, as well as the Irish Primary and Irish Secondary Schools national titles.
Next July, 19 children from the club will travel to Aosta in Italy to challenge some of Italy’s juvenile champions.
The club now has a chance to win a €2,000 bursary, sponsored by Eco Solar Energy. Bennekerry/Tinryland Draughts Club has been run entirely on a voluntary basis for the last 40 years, during which time hundreds of local children have reaped the rewards of hours of lessons in strategic thinking and critical decision-making.
Every success to the club going forward.
