Leinster Rugby this afternoon announced the short-term loan signing of Carlow prop Ed Byrne from Cardiff.
32-year-old Byrne was a popular player in his first spell at the province, where he played 102 times for Leinster between 2014 and 2024, winning six international caps along the way.
His return, Leinster say, is “to provide immediate cover and valuable experience to the squad during a demanding period of fixtures,” going on to note that “he will link up with the squad immediately for the remainder of the current block of fixtures.”
Byrne joined the Welsh region in the summer of 2024 but endured two injury-hit seasons at the Arms Park. A specialist loosehead prop, the Carlow man will be needed to plug a major gap in the Leinster pack, with Andrew Porter, Jack Boyle, Paddy McCarthy and now Alex Usanov all out inured, the province are left with only Jerry Cahir - himself the beneficiary of a short-term deal earlier in the season to cover the ongoing injury crisis - the only recognised loosehead prop left in the squad.
Leinster have a vital run of games coming up over the next three weeks, facing Ulster and Benetton away from home in crucial URC games before welcoming French side Toulon to the Aviva Stadium for the impending Champions Cup semi-final.

Head Coach, Leo Cullen commented: "We're delighted to have Ed back in blue for the remainder of this season.
"Not only is Ed a great character but he also knows our system inside out, brings valuable experience, and will be a timely boost to our front-row options during what is a very busy and competitive stage of the season.
"We're very grateful to Cardiff Rugby for their understanding and cooperation in facilitating this move."
Meanwhile, Cardiff boss Corniel van Zyl said: “Ed leaves the club with our very best wishes for the future. He has been incredibly unlucky with injuries during his time with the club and I know this has been hugely frustrating to him.
“However, he is a really good person and it was important that we did the right thing for him and his career.
“While he hasn’t played as much as we would have liked, he has contributed a huge amount at the Arms Park through his vast experience, his leadership and the standards he drives.
“With his contract expiring in the summer, this is a great opportunity for Ed to continue his return to rugby at a club he is very familiar with as he looks to secure a contract for next season.”
