IT was a day to remember for St Laurence O'Toole Athletic club as a there was a huge turnout for the official opening of their new Olympic standard full-sized track.

PL Curran, a man who did so much work to bring the project to fruition, was the MC for the event that saw a number of national and local dignitaries speak to praise the facility which they hope will not only service this generation of local athletes but also inspire the next generation.

Minister of Sport, Thomas Byrne, was present as were a host of local politicians, many of whom had played their part in securing the funding for this exciting project.

1984 Olympic silver medalist John Treacy was the special guest, while Athletics Ireland CEO Hamish Adams also spoke.

Some of the current St Laurence O'Toole AC athletes were on hand to help with the ribbon cutting. Aaron Shorten, who competed in the recent Paralympics in Paris received a loud round of applause for his efforts while representing the club, as did national champions Molly Scott and Adam Nolan.

As well as those current stars, many young children from the local schools also got the chance to test out the track.

We'll have much more on this event in Tuesday's edition of The Nationalist, as well as on the website in the coming days.
