Derry City kick off league by beating Sligo Rovers while Drogheda beat Galway

Derry City have kicked off their SSE Airtricity League Premier Division campaign with a comeback 2-1 win against Sligo Rovers.

Josh Thomas and Alex Bannon both scored in the last 10 minutes, as Tiernan Lynch's side opened by taking all three points at the Brandywell.

Lynch recruited well in the off-season, with the additions of James Clarke, Darragh Markey, and brothers Patrick and James McClean.

The points were shared at the RSC as Waterford and Shelbourne finished 1-1.

John Martin put Shels in front, but Tommy Lonergan earned his share of the spoils for Waterford.

Meanwhile, Jago Godden grabbed a last-minute winner as Drogheda United beat Galway United 1-0.

David Hurley missed a penalty for the host Galway at Eamon Deacy Park.

The game between Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk was postponed earlier after the pitch at Tallaght Stadium failed an inspection on Friday morning, due to the pitch being waterlogged.

In a statement on X, Rovers said: "Tonight's game has been postponed after the pitch at Tallaght Stadium failed a pitch inspection. A new date for this fixture will be confirmed in due course."

The match has since been rescheduled for Monday, February 23rd at 8pm.
