Tinryland finish strongly to clinch IFC final spot

Tinryland's Peter Hennessey celebrates scoring a vital second half goal against Kildavin Clonegal.

TALBOT HOTEL INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL

TINRYLAND 2-15 KILDAVIN-CLONEGAL 0-9

Tinryland scored 1-4 without reply in the final ten minutes to run out worthy winners of this Intermediate Football Championship semi-final on Sunday in Netwatch Cullen Park.

In a tame enough first half Kildavin-Clonegal eased themselves into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead with Joe Roberts converting two frees and adding another point from play. Diarmaid Walshe accounted for the Tinryland point from play. His brother, Cormac, halved the deficit and Paddy Regan equalised.

A two-pointer from Diarmaid Walshe on 23 minutes had the potential to build Tinryland momentum. Kildavin-Clonegal didn’t panic but Roberts was their only scorer in the opening period. Conor Carew converted a last ditch 45 to add to his earlier point from play to give Tinryland a 0-7 to 0-5 at the change of end.

On the restart it was tough end to end stuff. Tinryland pushed on with Diarmaid Walshe accounting for two points. Paddy Regan also raised a white flag.

Kildavin-Clonegal suffered a blow when they lost Daniel Cronin to a black card on 39 minutes. A Jake Nolan two-pointer kept the Wexford border side in the game. With just under ten minutes left to play Peter Hennessy got under a high delivery from Danny Moran to edge the ball to the Kildavin-Clonegal net.

The flood gates opened after that. Regan fed Carew who scored Tinryland’s second goal and that was that.
