STRYVE UNDER 21 FOOTBALL B CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

TINRYLAND 2-14 FIGHTING COCKS 2-7

Tinryland took the last footballing silverware that was on offer this season when they produced a solid second half performance to lift the Under 21 Football B Championship at a freezing Training Centre on Saturday.

It has been a difficult year for the Rathcrogue based club but the signs here would suggest they have a base to build for the future.

In an even opening quarter it was no surprise that Aaron Dowling pulled the strings for The Fighting Cocks scoring two points. Tinryland hit back with a goal when Walter Webb picked out Seamus McCullough close to the posts and the corner forward fisted home from close range.

The Cocks hit back straight away and when Darragh Byrne seized on a high ball, he used his strength and was not going to be denied when finding the Tinryland net.

The eventual winners enjoyed a purple patch and made use of it with Jamie Doyle landing a two-point free. Lorcan O’Connor and Mikey Byrne also raised white flags as Tinryland took a 1-9 to 1-5 advantage into the second half.

The Cocks have built up a reputation for themselves this year as a side who will battle the whole way. The opponents would have been aware of this and they in turn dug in. When not in possession Tinryland worked hard making life difficult for their opponents. On the ball, they were clever and patient. Their reward was another goal when Calum O’Brien Murphy diverted the ball to the net from close range.

The Cocks hit back and after consulting with his umpire, referee, Larry Murphy, awarded them a penalty. Dowling did what he has been doing all year with school, St Martins and the Cocks when he gave Conall McGuire no chance when finding the inside of the right-hand post.

In hindsight though, it was a false dawn for The Cocks. Tinryland dominated the final quarter. Doyle added another two-pointer and their enterprise was rewarded when Sean Murphy came forward from the half-back line to land a point which was well received by the large Tinryland following.

Cocks finished the match laying siege on the Tinryland goal but it was enough and the eventual winners held on comfortably for the deserved win.
