St Patrick's to host Carlow senior footballers after 15-year absence

The Dioralyte O’Byrne Shield quarter-final tie against Wexford will be the Carlow senior footballers' first visit to Br Leo Park since 2011.

Due to the ongoing refurbishments of the dressing rooms at Netwatch Cullen Park, the Carlow Senior Footballers will play their Dioralyte O’Byrne Shield quarter-final tie against Wexford in Br Leo Park on Wednesday, January 7th.

The last time our Carlow Senior Footballers played in the home of St Patrick’s was also an O’Byrne Cup fixture back in 2011, against UCD.

The GAA grounds in Tullow has received multiple upgrades over the last decade plus since that fixture, with the most recent Community Recognition Fund from Carlow County Council seeing the installation of additional spectator railing, new dugouts and a water refill point.

Another major addition to the grounds as part of this grant is the robotic mower. This allows the playing fields to be cut at an exact height and eliminates the requirement for the tractor pulled mower.

This gives an excellent finish on the cut as well as a smooth surface to maximise grass growth as well as giving a slick roll which looks great.

Woodlawn Developments have been the platinum sponsor of St Patricks GAA since 2017 and have completed multiple projects over the years with the most recent being the eye catching signage on the clubhouse wall and at the main entrance.

The local company have also sponsored and installed the new roadside terrace with three standing heights extending from the 20-metre line to the far end of the field.

This will be the main viewing area for the O’Byrne Cup fixture and offers a dry clean viewing area for spectators.

St Patrick’s GAA club gym, upstairs in the clubhouse, have held training sessions for various Carlow GAA and LGFA teams with the balcony area adjacent to the gym to be used for speakers and a public announcement system on the night.

The one area that can’t be created is additional parking and the club have discussed this with local Gardai.

Those attending the O’Byrne Cup Fixture are requested to park in some of the town main carparks as only one row of car parking on the Ballymurphy Road is permitted to ensure emergency vehicles can access the road if required.

Parking is available in the town at the main council carpark behind AIB bank. The church carpark as well as some of the smaller carparks with local shop owners being requested to facilitate some extra cars.

Attendees are asked to respect the advice and directions of our parking stewards and Gardai to ensure the safety of all attending the game, and those living in close proximity to Br Leo Park.

St Patrick’s GAA are proud to host this fixture and will have small exhibition games at half time featuring U10 and U12 footballers.

There will also be a coffee box on site to ensure spectators can warm their bellies with hot beverages and snacks.

This week's As I Roved Out column focused on the previous games at Bro Leo Park for the Carlow senior footballers.
