JJ KAVANAGH & SONS SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 2

ST MULLINS 3-15 NAOMH EOIN 0-12

The final scoreline of this second round Senior Hurling Championship second round game at Netwatch Cullen Park on Saturday flattered the eventual winners but there was no doubt that St Mullins deserved their victory.

Conor Kehoe (f) and John Doyle for St Mullins and Naomh Eoin’s Brian Tracey (f) and John Michael Nolan (f) shared four points in the opening minutes but when Sean Doyle flashed over a point to give them the lead St Mullins were never caught.

By half-time they led 0-13 to 0-5 and the St Mullins side added a Colm Kavanagh goal early in the second period. Naomh Eoin played some good hurling as the game went into the final quarter with James Smithers, Colm Beck and Paddy Doyle among the scorers to bring them within six points of their rivals.

It was to no avail. Kehoe bored his way through the Naomh Eoin defence for another goal. Eddie Doyle was also on the end of a passing movement involving Gary Bennett and Sean Grennan who unselfishly released the runner down the right at the tunnel end of the ground. His strike into the bottom left hand corner was the icing on the cake for the South Carlow side.
