“He is full of energy. He is very enthusiastic and passion is in his DNA really,” said Jim Bolger, the County Board Chairman when it was announced that Shane Curran of Roscommon is set to take over as manager of the Carlow senior football team.
Curran succeeds Niall Carew who stepped down this year when Carlow made their exit from the Tailteann Cup. Carlow made the announcement today but the appointment still has to be officially ratified by the clubs at the next full County Board meeting.
Curran won an All-Ireland club medal with St Brigids in 2013 and only stepped down as manager of the Caulry senior football team in 2023 after three years in charge. He led them to their first senior championship semi-final since 1946 where they lost to Coralstown/Kinnegad. He also enjoyed successful spells in Padraig Pearses of Roscommon and was manager of the Durrow team which won an Offaly senior B title.
Bolger said this was a good time for Curran to be coming to Carlow.
“He will add a lot and he will build on what Niall Carew and the lads did. There is a good platform to build on I feel. He (Carew) kept the core players there for three and a half years.
“I think keeping those players coming back in year and after year is very positive. Now, they have a nice bit of experience. There are a good age and, hopefully, Shane will be the man to get them over the line, get them up another notch because that is what we need with this group,” noted Bolger who is confident Carlow can now go up a level from where they were last season.
“We are looking forward to an exciting time for us and when you have a man full of energy like Shane, full of enthusiasm which just bubbles out, it could be a great time.” The County Board Chairman also confirmed he is hopeful he will be in a position to confirm that the current senior hurling manager, Tom Mullally, is set to continue as Carlow manager.
“We are nearly there with Tom. We will know within the next week,” Bolger said.
