Electric Ireland Ryan Cup semi final

 TUD 1-22

 SETU Carlow 1-10

A sharp shooting display by TUD secured their place in the Electric Ireland Ryan Cup final, as they accounted with relative ease, the challenge of SETU Carlow at the Connacht GAA Centre on Friday afternoon.

TUD, tipped by many for ultimate success were down to 14 after just 30 seconds, when their midfielder Luke Kavanagh was sent to the line. This early shock did little to hamper their challenge and did even less to motivate SETU Carlow, who fell away early in the second half. Throughout the hour the free taking ability of James O’ Brien was instrumental to the win of TUD, and he had the opening three scores for TUD with Tomas Kinsella adding a fourth early on as Ben Aspel and Ryan Corcoran responded for SETU.

In the second quarter, it was more evident that it was becoming a case of how much TUD would win by, unless SETU were to take control of the second half, they were facing defeat. TUD outscored their opponents 1-4 to 0-3 with the goal coming from wing forward Ciaran Regan as O’Brien, Regan and Finbarr Wardick added the four points with Conor Nolan and Jack Breen attempting to keep SETU in the game.

Both sides began to run on replacements in the early stages of the second half as James O’ Brien, Richie Lawlor, Ciaran Regan, Thomas Kinsella and Joe Joe Kavanagh and Brian Hayes turned the screw on SETU who despite their best efforts simply were pinned into their own half of the field. By the end of the third quarter it read 1-18 to 0-8 in favour of the winners as TUD also hit 13 wides as opposed to seven for former Fitzgibbon side SETU. Tim Brennan with a point and Lochlann Quinn with a 58th minute goal allied to the last score of the game for Conor Nolan put a gloss on the score for SETU. Yet, when Michael Connolly blew the long whistle, it was a dozen scores difference for Patrick McAvinue side as they qualified for the final against Garda College.

Best for the winners included Conor Heary, Ryan Malone, the ever-accurate James O’ Brien, Thomas Kinsella, Ciaran Regan and Cian Browne. SETU never got a chance to show what they are capable of even with a spare man for over an hour’s action. Best for SETU included Cian Nolan, Lochlann Quinn, Michael Dundon, Rory Delaney, Ryan Corcoran and Gearoid Lynch.
